Trustees and Committee

The GMCTF is a charity registered in the United Kingdom. The GMCTF currently has three trustees, who are responsible for the proper conduct of the charity. They are supported by a committee who assist in the assessment of applications and the general running of the charity.

  • Justin Willis

    Justin Willis is a professor in Modern African History at the University of Durham. His research and publications focus on eastern Africa, including Sudan and South Sudan. He is the Chair of Trustees.

  • Robert Cunningham

    Robert Cunningham is a chartered accountant who has worked for many years in the banking sector and currently focuses on tax issues. He is one of three GMCTF trustees.

  • Peter Newman

    Peter Newman a retired consultant neurologist. He was Royal College of Physicians Associate International Director (Africa). He has taught and examined undergraduate and postgraduate physicians throughout Africa, including Khartoum, Juba, and Gezira. He has been a trustee of the GMCTF for almost two decades.

  • Deirdre Christiansen

    Deirdre Christiansen has been the secretary/treasurer of the GMCTF since 2007. She recently retired as UK credit controller for a large printing company. Prior to this, Deirdre worked as the practice manager for an international design consultancy.

  • Eluzai Hakim

    Eluzai Hakim is a retired consultant physician in Rehabilitation Medicine. He has taught and examined medical students in their final year of medical studies. He founded the South Sudan Medical Journal and is its current Associate Editor. He joined the GMCTF committee in 2008.

  • Terry Martin

    Terry Martin is a retired lecturer, most recently based at the University of Southampton. He has authored several leading papers in a range of fields and has supervised students who were funded through the GMCTF. He has paid a number of educational visits to Sudan to learn more about the work that GMCTF students have undertaken.

  • Joanna Oyediran

    Joanna Oyediran is an independent researcher with extensive experience in human rights and philanthropy. She worked at the Open Society Foundations between 2017 and September 2022 leading on development and improvement of OSF grant making policy. Joanna has extensive programmatic experience in Eastern Africa. Between 2005 and 2009, she led a team of human rights officers responsible for monitoring and reporting on human rights violations in West Darfur.
